FAQs About Florida International University

Is Florida International University Legitimate?

Yes, FIU — and all its online degrees — are perfectly legitimate. The key reason for this is that FIU receives institutional accreditation from a U.S. Department of Education-recognized agency. Accreditation means that the agency routinely reviews FIU's financial practices and academic programs to ensure they meet high standards and deliver what's promised to students. OnlineU only includes accredited institutions on its site.

FIU is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate, baccalaureate, master's and doctorate degrees, and certificates.

What Is Florida International University Known For?

FIU is known for being one of the nation's largest online learning providers, serving over 56,600 students, of which 26% of undergraduate and 29% of graduate students are enrolled entirely online.

FIU is also known for being a predominately Hispanic-serving institution (HSI). On OnlineU's list "HSIs with the highest payoff," FIU comes in at #2, with a Hispanic student population of approximately 67%.

FIU is also known for being a top-tier research institution. The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences' Discovery Lab are just two FIU colleges dedicated to setting new standards through research initiatives that support the university's mission.

What Degrees does FIU Offer Online?

FIU offers over 100 online undergraduate and graduate degree programs across in-demand fields, such as health services administration, information technology, women's and gender studies, nursing, business, public administration, and special education.

FIU ranks #4 and #8 for the best online degrees in biology and early childhood education, respectively.

Which Degrees at FIU Provide the Highest Earnings for Graduates?

According to federal data from College Scorecard, FIU's online bachelor's degrees in computer engineering and high-ranking online electrical engineering degrees provide the highest earnings for graduates. Each degree yields a $77,169 and $72,034 annual median salary, respectively.

How Difficult Is It To Get Into FIU?

Getting into FIU is moderately difficult, as it only accepts 58% of its first-year applicants. One of the reasons for this competition could be that FIU requires future students to submit college entrance exam scores to be considered for enrollment. FIU generally admits students with combined SAT math and critical reading scores between 1100-1280 or ACT scores between 23-29.

What Are the Admission Requirements for FIU?

Admission requirements for FIU are similar to that of other institutions of higher learning. Applying as a first-year student requires following these steps:

  • Submit entrance exam scores
  • Complete an online application and submit a $30 application fee
  • Send official high school transcripts or their equivalent
  • Send college or military transcripts, if applicable
  • Provide residency documentation to determine whether you'll pay in-state or out-of-state tuition

Distance learners interested in earning an online graduate degree must have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum 3.0 GPA. However, online master’s and doctoral programs may have additional enrollment requirements unique to the course of study being applied for, so it’s best to work with an FIU advisor when applying.

Degree: Economics

Admin is money hungry and will find any way to charge you and hold charges against you no matter what. The enrollment center can't even follow their own rules for their student petition, because circumstances that are out of students' control aren't enough for them to accommodate simple requests, even when it states they are covered. Making me pay $5000 for classes I can't even take? Very disappointed in how they handled and decided on the situation. Steer clear of FIU. Already pulled out all future... Read More

Degree: Finance

Very disappointed with teaching skills and processes, online due to the pandemic made it worst. Professor would explain a already solved math problem with notes from previous classes that were imposible to follow. It was also hard to understand the teachers accent. No interaction with the class just 4 hours of talking. Waste of money

Florida International University (FIU) is a university that supports its students throughout their educational journey. While no school is perfect, the faculty at FIU encouraged personal and intellectual growth both in class and outside of the classroom. Professors at the university are dedicated to their profession and help students who are struggling as well as students who want to go the distance. While career services and financial aide continue to work out some kinks, the professors serve as... Read More

Degree: Communications (Strategic & Organizational)

It was an online program. The online program offered additional support such as a Panther Success coach to keep students on track. Each week we had papers, online class discussions and reviewed relevant cases that pertained to our track (e.g. organizational communication, leadership). However, I participated in a summer study abroad program focusing on Asian cultural communication patterns such as the power of language. I spent about two months in Southeast Asia visiting Thailand, China, Cambodia,... Read More

Degree: RN to BSN

Great Institution. The program was straightforward and completely online. I was able to maintain full-time employment while completing the requirements for the RN to BSN degree. Because of the great experience I had there, it was the only school that I decided to apply to for my DNP.

Degree: Business Administration

I'm technically in the CMBA program, which is designed for those who have jobs, families, etc. and need a flexible class schedule ( I go online) and also that caters to their experiences. I found the program has some fundamental issues with the way it's ran. There is a wide variance in teachers and the abilities to instruct over an online medium, and some really fail miserably. I feel most of the instructors are very good people, and will help you when you get stuck, which is great because the courses... Read More

Degree: MBA in Management

The program for the MBA is great. However, the service is awful. Lack of customer service and they have employees that do not know what are the steps that you need to take. One person will say something and when you call back for more explanation, another person will provide you with a completely different instruction. They make life difficult, you cannot ask any questions they really don't care about their students. It is like if you were bothering. They lack professionalism.

FIU is an up and coming school that has so many aspects that will attract many prospective students. From its rich historical and cultural diversity to community involvement, this school has something for everyone. The curriculum is comprehensive and is cultivated by faculty who are highly qualified in the area of their studies. They are mentors and consistently breaking through the barriers of the educational glass ceiling.

Degree: Paralegal

I graduated the FIU Paralegal Studies program in 2015. I would 'strongly recommend' that anyone entering this program: 1) Already be employed as a paralegal, or 2) Already have 'work experience' as a paralegal. Let me make one thing 'very clear' so that you don't waste your time & money on this program. FIU's Paralegal 'Job Board' only posts jobs for 'Experienced Paralegals.' You absolutely cannot substitute 'Edication for Experience' with any of the jobs posted on this site, at least not in South... Read More

Degree: Business Administration

Great professors and online learning was very convenient, while still getting the same level of commitment from professors and peers as courses taken on campus. The degree really helped me achieve many career goals and obtain the position I wanted to be able to have once I graduated.
